Spanish dog-fanciers may be forced to neuter pets.

By Salvador Sanchez
SEVILLA (Dogueros Blogspot) - The governors of the region of Andalusia in southern Spain are about to throw out a bill which forces the owners of 15 dog breeds and their mixes to neuter their dogs. The breeds which are affected by that bill are: Akita Inu (Japanese Akita), American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bullmastiff, Ca de Bou (Perro de Presa Mallorquin), Dobermann, Dogo Argentino, Dogo Canario (Perro de Presa Canario), Dogue de Bordeaux, Fila Brasileiro, Mastino Napoletano, Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bullterrier, Tibetan Mastiff and Tosa Inu (Japanese Tosa). A government official claimed that the bill is a necessity to control the attacks of dogs which increased in Spain during the last years. Valid sources from Spain say that if the Bill passes in Andalusia, the next step would be to pass it through the laws of whole Spain.
Dog fanciers over Spain and whole Europe are signing an online petition to express their contrariety at
http://www.petitiononline.com/qq3d4320/ . The petition with all the signatures will be forwarded to the Direccion General de Espectaculos Publicos y Juegos and is open to anyone who will express his or her objection against such laws.

Pets banned by Air Canada

taken from http://www.reuters.com
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Sorry Fluffy. Tough luck, Fido. Air Canada will be banning all pets from its passenger planes from July 15 this year.
The airline decided to stop carrying cats and dogs in the cargo hold because of increasing load factors as well as tighter security measures that are leading people to check more bags, said airline spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick. "Animals in the hold actually reduce the amount of space we have for luggage because you've got to leave an area for ventilation or oxygen and as well they require extra handling," he said.
The airline stopped carrying pets in the cabin last September because of concerns over passengers with allergies. People who want to transport their pets after July 15 can use planes operated by Air Canada's cargo operation. Fitzpatrick said the decision was not directly linked to the case of a Canadian doctor whose dog died of carbon monoxide poisoning while in the hold of a flight in early 2004. The plane was operated by a now defunct Air Canada subsidiary.
The Canadian Transport Agency (CTA) ruled in 2006 that the airline was not liable for the death of animals in its care.

Californians may be forced to neuter pets

By Jim Christie (Reuters)
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California may become the only U.S. state to require the sterilization of pets under a bill passed by the state Assembly, pitting dog and cat lovers against animal rights activists.
"It's a horrific bill," said Maureen Hill-Hauch, executive director of Castleton, New York-based American Dog Owners Association, adding that enforcement of the bill in theory could wipe out California's dog population.
The bill would require pet owners to spay and neuter their dogs and cats, or face a $500 fine for each animal.
Breeders, as well as owners of guide dogs, could obtain exemptions.
The Democrat-led state Assembly narrowly approved the bill late on Wednesday. It now goes to the state Senate amid a flurry of legislation that must be passed by Friday.
Republicans in the minority in both chambers do not consider the bill a priority and say it is too intrusive. "It's micro-managing," said Republican Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa.
Supporters say the bill requiring pets to be spayed or neutered is necessary to reduce the population of unwanted pets dumped in the state's shelters.
At least 500,000 animals each year are killed in the most populous U.S. state, imposing an unacceptable "humanitarian" cost on California, said Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, the Democrat promoting the bill.
Those dogs and cats also impose a big expense to the state as keeping and killing them costs $300 million a year, Levine said in a telephone interview.
Leslie Nuccio of the San Francisco area group Bad Rap -- Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pit bulls -- said the bill offers a solution to California's "pet overpopulation problem" because too few owners voluntarily spay or neuter their pets.
"Unfortunately, it just hasn't been enough to staunch the flow of unwanted animals," she said.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has not taken a position on the bill and will not disclose whether his two dogs have been spayed or neutered, said spokesman Aaron McLear: "He doesn't want to get into the personal lives of Sarge and Spunky."

Job seeker rejected due to "racist dog"

taken from http://www.reuters.com
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A Belgian businessman rejected a Nigerian job applicant because the businessman said his own dog was racist and would bite non-whites, Belgian media reported Saturday. The 53-year-old man Nigerian told De Standaard newspaper he arrived at the Belgian's wrought-iron business and was immediately confronted by the barking dog.
The Belgian turned the man away before he could even enter, and wrote on his labor office letter that he could not hire the man because of his color, adding there was a risk the dog would bite him.
The local labor office has concluded that the Belgian was racist and has removed him from its list of potential employers.
"My dog is racist. Not me," the Belgian told De Standaard.
The Nigerian, who has lived in Belgium for 32 years, said it was not the first time he had been rejected for a job because of his color, although other employers had been more subtle.
He told the newspaper that he did not wish to lodge a formal complaint because he did not wish his family in Nigeria to hear about the case.

Rabies kills 201 people in China in May

taken from http://www.reuters.com
BEIJING, June 12 (Reuters) - Rabies killed 201 people in China last month, staying at the top of the list of the most deadly infectious diseases in the country, state media said on Tuesday.
Rabies has topped the list for the last 13 months, except in March when tuberculosis came first, the China Daily said, blaming dogs for spreading the disease.Beijing has introduced a "one family, one dog" policy and last year launched a campaign against unregistered dogs.
The State Food and Drug Administration also said last year it would severely punish companies that produce fake and poor quality rabies vaccines, after several people reportedly died from substandard vaccines.Fake or bad drugs have killed dozens of people in China in recent years and raised questions about drug safety.Last year, Shanghai implanted digital chips in the ears of 65,000 dogs to improve "canine management" and prevent the spread of rabies.Pet dogs were shunned in the days of Mao Zedong as a symbol of bourgeois decadence but have become increasingly popular in the past decade with improved living standards.
Rabies is an acute viral infection that is nearly always fatal. It can be transmitted by the bite of an infected animal, usually a dog.
Rabies kills about 50,000 people across the world each year.

Eurodog 2007 Results

results taken from the Croatian Kennel Club (HKS)

An impressive entrance of 139 Dogos Argentinos at the Eurodog Show 2007 which was held in Zagreb, Croatia from 8th to 10th of June. The judging of Giulio Bezecchi from Italy (for puppy and junior classes) and Rafael Malo Alcrudo from Spain (for the intermediate and adult classes) didn't leave the best taste for the participing dogueros and probably gave reason to those who had doubts when the judges names were announced. It was a surprise when no uncropped Dogo appeared on the shortlists of each class. Besides this, the all-around image of the dogos was in a very high level and some very interesting dogos appeared in the front places. Best of Breed was Aragon bred and owned by Ivan Redegalli from Italy. Best Female was Pimenta Divina Fortitudo owned and bred by Mr. Luca Ricci from Italy and best junior in Breed was Inti del Picadero bred and owned by Francesco and Mario Pinelli from Italy. A Gala Dinner was held after the show at the Restaurant Pavillion where more than 200 people participated.
